In 2010, the Caribbean islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba (often referred to as the BES islands) underwent a change in status, becoming special municipalities within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This transition led to a restructuring of governance and administration in the region.
The handling of intellectual property matters for the BES islands falls under the authority of the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP), which is based in The Hague, Netherlands. This office manages trademark registrations for goods and services in accordance with the Nice Classification system, offering international priority without the requirement of prior use.
Trademark registrations in the BES islands are valid for ten years from the date of application, with the option for renewal for additional ten-year periods.
